The Society of Rheology, Japan (SRJ) was founded in 1973 and was approved, in 2005, by Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology as an only official society specialized to rheological research in Japan. SRJ is a member of the International Congress of Rheology.
The aim of SRJ is to promote the research in the field of rheology by supplying information and offering opportunities for cooperation among scientists and engineers with any interest in rheology. It publishes a periodical journal, regularly organizes a few meetings each year, occasionally organizes international conferences, and supports meetings sponsored by other societies.
The SRJ now consists of three Branches covering east, middle, and west parts of Japan. It also has six Special Divisions, each involving the members in a specific field of rheology. The SRJ consists of more than 1,000 personal members and 45 sustaining members as of April 2006. The SRJ membership is open to all researchers from any part of the world, and to all persons who feel the activities of the society advance their professional development and intellectual curiosity.

THE RHEOLOGY COURSE, held for 2 days in every November or December, is an introductory course in rheology for materials engineers. The course, covering rheology in general, is highly appreciated for educating newcomers in industries, and about 100 participants attend the course every year.
THE COURSE FOR FOOD RHEOLOGY, held for 2 days in every December for a limited number of participants (30 at the maximum), is a comprehensive course for foods and natural products. The course, offering several lectures combined with actual rheological measurements on site, is highly appreciated for improving the use of rheological measurements as a tool in food industry.
THE COURSE FOR SUSPENSIONS, held for 1 day in every June, is a comprehensive course for suspensions/emulsions. The course is highly appreciated for improving the use of rheological measurements as a tool in industries related to paints, cosmetics, flow designing, etc.
THE RHEOLOGY WORKSHOP, held occasionally according to requests from the SRJ members, is an introductory workshop for a specific subject like computer-aided engineering.
INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCES have been occasionally organized by SRJ. The meetings include the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Kyoto Symposia on Rheology (1884, 1988, 1996, and 2002) and the 1st Pacific Conference on Rheology (PCR). The 5th Pacific Rim Conference on Rheology (PRCR; previously RCR) will be organized by SRJ in 2010.
THE SRJ AWARD and THE SRJ RESEARCH AWARD are given to a few members of SRJ who made creative and distinguished scientific researches in the field of rheology.
THE SRJ TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENT AWARD is given to a member of SRJ (or to his/her group containing less than 6 persons) who made important contributions in technological developments in the field of rheology.
THE SRJ BEST PRESENTATION AWARD is given to a few young members of SRJ (of the age less than 30) who made excellent presentations at the annual meeting of SRJ.
For nomination of recipients of these awards, a letter explaining the career and the work of the candidate (within two pages), a list of publication of the candidate, and three sets of five representative papers of the candidate are to be sent to the following address via regular mail:
